Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, sports fans and wannabe's, and of course fellow coaches, I want to welcome you all to tonight's, annual, COACH OF THE YEAR Awards ceremony.
You really want to get with the program. You know you desperately need to get back on track and turn over a new leaf. You've got this dream that you want to pursue and all this work that you've got to get done in order to begin to make it happen.
In far too many youth sports in the United States there is an over-emphasis by coaches and leagues on winning games and championships at the cost of really teaching kids the fundamentals of the game. The result?
In the stuck-up, ego-centered, "I am the greatest" world of professional sports, it's truly rare and refreshing to find such a classy and deserving champion like the current World's #1 tennis player, Rafael Nadal. Despite his recent loss in the quarterfinals of the French Open which he had won the four previous years, Nadal epitomizes everything that is right with competitive sports.
You've heard the cliche' before: PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. Fact is, this is only true if you're practicing the right stuff. There are so many athletes who invest a tremendous amount of time and energy into their training and then are left confused as to why all thiS practicing doesn't pay off when they compete.
Mental imagery or visualization : The process of mentally practicing your performance either to prepare for an upcoming competition, enhance the learning process, replay a past great outing or to "practice" effectively handling difficult performance situations.
An athlete of mine, an equestrian, recently made a decision to take her training and sport to the next level. Towards this end, she left her traditional high school and began taking an approved on-line program so that she would have more time to devote to her riding and competing.
The golfer stands over a 6 foot putt thinking, "I need to make this in order to stay 3-over. Then if I can just birdie one or two of the last few holes, I might even have a chance at finishing close to par." The baseball player steps up to the plate with thoughts about average bouncing around upstairs, "I've gotta get a hit here.
Endurance athletes of all kinds regularly rely on times to help them measure overall progress, plan for upcoming races and, during a race, to effectively execute their race strategy. During training, learning to hold the proper race pace is absolutely critical for race day success.
