Your score was:

00

Possible Score Range: -15 to 60

(The higher your score, the more likely it is that your involvement may be creating added pressure for your child or interfering with their ability to fully enjoy and take ownership of their sport.)

A note about your score

Being a winning parent isn’t about raising an athlete who wins. It’s about creating the conditions that allow your child to grow, compete, struggle, succeed, fail and develop a healthy relationship with their sport.

In this assessment, higher scores indicate a greater tendency toward parental over-involvement, pressure, coaching or emotional investment in your child’s performance. Lower scores indicate that you are more consistently allowing your child to take ownership of their athletic experience while providing support from the sidelines.

Your score isn’t a judgment of you as a parent. Instead, use it as an opportunity to notice where you may be helping your child thrive — and where making a few shifts could make their athletic experience even healthier.

Want Support Navigating Your Role as a Sports Parent?

Supporting a young athlete isn’t always easy. You want to encourage them, help them reach their potential and be there when things get hard — without adding more pressure or taking over an experience that ultimately belongs to them.

And sometimes, knowing what you should do as a parent is the easy part.

Watching your child struggle, fail, lose confidence, sit on the bench, make mistakes or not live up to their potential can bring up a lot in us as parents. Our own experiences with sports, success, failure, competition and even how we were parented can shape how we respond to our kids — often without us realizing it.

When our own fears, expectations or triggers get activated, it can become much harder to separate what our child actually needs from us from what we are feeling ourselves.

Competitive Advantage offers 1:1 Parent Consultations to help you navigate both sides of that equation. We can look at what’s happening with your athlete, what the experience may be bringing up for you, and how you can respond in ways that support their confidence, independence and long-term relationship with their sport.

Whether your athlete is struggling with confidence, pressure, motivation, perfectionism or setbacks — or you simply want to become more intentional about how you support them — we can help.
