The Competitive
Depth Method™
An integrative system that works from the inside out.
Where mental toughness meets nervous system science.
Train your mind and body to lock in, compete freer and perform to your potential — no matter what you’re up against.
Mindset alone isn’t enough.
At Competitive Advantage, we’ve spent decades helping athletes overcome fear, build confidence, and perform at their best when it matters most. Our founder, Dr. Alan Goldberg, pioneered breakthrough mental training strategies that rewired the brain for success under pressure.
But over time, we discovered something critical: many athletes knew what to think, yet still froze, crumbled, or lost skills under pressure.
The missing piece wasn’t more mental strategies — it was the body.
That discovery took our work deeper.
Since then, our approach has expanded to integrate proven mental training with nervous system science, body intelligence, and capacity building—allowing us to work with more of what influences an athlete’s ability to perform under pressure.
This integrated approach became The Competitive Depth Method™.
This is what makes lasting change possible.
Why Depth?
Because performance is influenced by more than what we see.
What we see in competition is the outcome. Underneath it are layers of thoughts, beliefs, emotions, nervous system responses, body patterns, past experiences, relationships, and environments that all influence how an athlete shows up when it matters most.
Our work goes deeper so athletes can have more to draw from when the demands of competition rise. We help athletes expand the resources available to them — from mental skills, confidence, and focus to body intelligence, nervous system capacity, awareness, and flexibility under pressure.
And for us, depth reflects the work itself. The Competitive Depth Method™ is the evolution of more than 40 years of mental training expertise, expanded through nervous system science and body-based approaches to performance.
What Makes This Method Different
Most mental training teaches athletes to think differently.
The Competitive Depth Method™ trains to access more of their resources under pressure by working with both the brain and the body.
Athletes learn to:
- Recognize when their mind AND body are interfering with their ability to perform.
- Recognize and shift fight, flight, or freeze responses so they can return to focus and execution.
- Build confidence that is embodied, not just imagined.
- Consistently access skills they already own in practice — even in high-stakes competition.
The evolution of the work
- Dr. G’s early work: A pioneer in mental toughness and mental performance training, Dr. G has spent more than 40 years helping thousands of athletes strengthen their mental game and perform their best under pressure.
- The missing piece: Over time, he recognized that some athletes — especially those with lost skills, fears, and mysterious repetitive performance blocks (ex. gymnasts and divers with who aren’t able to do skills they used to be able to do, baseball players with the yips, etc.) — weren’t improving with standard mental skills training alone.
- The turning point: Dr. G discovered the modality of Somatic Experiencing® (SE) and he realized performance problems were often trauma/nervous system-based. He trained in SE and began integrating nervous system and body based work with the mental training strategies he had used for decades with athletes.
- The work today: Together with his daughter Sara, the work has continued to deepen and expand. Drawing on their combined expertise in mental training, nervous system science, and body-based approaches, Dr. G and Sara developed The Competitive Depth Method™ — bringing decades of experience and multiple dimensions of performance together in one integrated approach.
The Pillars
of Competitive Advantage
Our five pillars bring our values into action — the foundations that make performance consistent and sustainable:
1. Mind-Body-Performance Connection
Understanding and training the link between mindset, physiology, and performance.
We teach athletes how their thoughts, body, and nervous system work together and how stress, worry, and competitive pressure can influence performance whether we want it to or not. Through mental toughness strategies, focus and concentration training, visualization, body awareness and nervous system capacity building, athletes learn to close the practice-to-competition gap, work more effectively under pressure, and break free from repetitive performance problems.
Awareness is the foundation of this work. Athletes learn to recognize what is happening in their thoughts, body, and stress response so they have more options for how to respond and can access more of their skills and resources when it matters most.
2. Confidence & Resilience Training
Cultivating belief, trust in self, and the ability to thrive through adversity.
This includes overcoming performance fears, slumps, and blocks, silencing negative thinking, and developing the confidence of a champion. We train confidence as a repeatable pattern in the body, helping athletes bounce back quickly from mistakes, losses, or injuries, turn setbacks into growth, and compete with consistent resilience — no matter what comes their way. We also help athletes build lasting motivation, think and perform like a winner, and root their confidence in self-trust rather than comparison to others.
3. Healthy Systems & Environments
Peak performance doesn’t happen in isolation — athletes thrive when coaches, parents, and teams create an environment that supports them.
We train coaches to lead with awareness and composure under pressure, parents to communicate in ways that build confidence instead of fear, and teams to foster trust and resilience. By transforming the athlete-parent-coach system, we eliminate hidden stressors, strengthen relationships, and create cultures where athletes can consistently perform their best.
4. Whole-Athlete/Performer Well-Being
We set the standard for training the whole athlete — recognizing that the mind, body, and physiology all play a role in an athlete’s ability to access their potential.
We integrate physical recovery — including sleep, nutrition, hydration, injury prevention with the MELT Method, and rest — with emotional awareness, nervous system capacity building, body intelligence and the unique needs of each individual athlete. These essentials aren’t extras — they support confidence, consistency, recovery and long-term success. By learning to listen to and care for their bodies, athletes can recover more effectively from setbacks and injuries, while sustaining joy and freedom that support peak performance without burnout.
5. Integration & Flow
Bringing together mindset, body awareness, confidence, and execution into consistent, repeatable performance.
Peak performance doesn’t come from one skill alone — it happens when all the pieces work together. Athletes learn to integrate mindset strategies, body intelligence, resilience, and supportive environments so they can access what they need to when it counts. It’s about closing the practice-to-competition gap, accessing flow states under pressure, and making confidence and consistency repeatable.
Integration ensures that athletes don’t just “know” the tools — they can access and apply them under pressure, across environments, and throughout life.
Who This Method Helps

Why it works
Peak performance requires both mind and body working together.
An athlete can know they’re prepared, have the skills, and understand exactly what they need to do, yet still struggle to access it when the pressure rises.
When the nervous system senses “threat” or becomes overwhelmed by the demands of the moment, mental toughness strategies alone are not enough. Stress and activation can change how an athlete thinks, feels, moves and responds— which is why knowing what to do doesn’t always translate into being able to do it in a competition environment.
The Competitive Depth Method™ works with this connection, bringing mental training, nervous system science and body-based approaches together so athletes can build greater capacity and more consistently access the skills and resources they already have.
It blends:
- Proven mental training strategies, including focus, visualization, concentration, reframing, and confidence building.
- Nervous system and body-based tools, including somatic awareness, capacity building, recovery, and body–mind integration.
- Decades of experience working with athletes at every level, from youth and collegiate athletes to Olympians and professionals.
The Competitive Depth Method™ is a whole-athlete approach to performance:
- Mindset + nervous system + focus + resilience + environment = potential unleashed
- Tools athletes can access and apply under pressure, in real competition.
- An integrated approach shaped by decades of experience and informed by the science of performance, the nervous system, and the mind-body connection.
This is about more than knowing what to think. It’s about having the skills, capacity and resources available to perform when the pressure is on.
